Internal medicine is a broad field that aims to prevent, diagnose, and treat a wide range of diseases in adult patients. From managing general health to acute conditions to chronic illnesses, internal medicine doctors have extensive knowledge of illnesses in adults and are well-trained to know when a referral to a specialist is needed and to which specialist. Internal medicine physicians or doctors are also commonly known as internists.
Internists treat a broad range of medical conditions, including:
While there is overlap between these two branches of medicine, the key difference resides in their patient demographics and the complexity of the medical conditions. Internal medicine focuses exclusively on adult medicine, while family medicine typically sees all the members of a family, regardless of their age. It is quite common for internal medicine doctors to work primarily in hospitals for patients who are admitted, as well as in outpatient clinics, while family medicine doctors work in outpatient settings. Internists manage more complex and specialized medical conditions for adults with multiple co-morbidities.
