Megestrol - What is it for

Megestrol is a medication used to treat advanced breast cancer and endometrial (lining of the womb) cancer.

It may also be used to improve appetite in certain patients facing significant weight loss.

What side effects can Megestrol cause?

Megestrol is usually well tolerated and serious side effects are rare.

Weight gain, due to increased appetite
Nausea may occur inititally
If this happens, take your tablets after food.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

Signs of a blood clot e.g. warmth, pain, redness and discoloration on arm or leg
Swelling of hands, feet or lower legs which causes discomfort
Sudden onset of cough, chest pain or shortness of breath
For women: Unexpected bleeding or discharge from the vagina

Before taking Megestrol , what precautions must I follow?

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any other medical conditions e.g. history of blood clots, diabetes.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding: Megestrol should not be taken at the same time.

How should Megestrol be used?

It is a tablet taken by mouth, with or without food. Take exactly as instructed by your doctor.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Megestrol, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is too near to your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your usual dosing time. Do not double dose.
