Fulvestrant - What is it for

Fulvestrant is a hormonal medicine used in advanced breast cancer. It may also be used in combination with other breast cancer medicines e.g. palbociclib, ribociclib.

Fulvestrant - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Fulvestrant cause?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle, joint, bone and back pain
    May be relieved by taking paracetamol.
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Hot flushes may occur
  • Sore throat
  • Pain at injection site

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Chest pain and rapid, irregular heartbeat
  • Swelling of extremities
  • Cough with difficulty breathing
  • Calf swelling or tenderness or hardness over a vein
  • Other persistent or severe side effects

Before taking Fulvestrant , what precautions must I follow?

Inform your doctor or pharmacist regarding any other medical conditions you have or medicines you are taking e.g. blood thinners.

How should Fulvestrant be used?

It is an injection given at the muscles in the buttocks. When fulvestrant is started, it is given once every 2 weeks for the first 3 doses. After which, it is injected only once a month.

If you missed a dose, inform your doctor immediately and arrange for a follow-up as soon as possible.
