Etoposide (Oral) - What is it for

Etoposide is a medicine that is used to treat many kinds of cancer.

What side effects can Etoposide (Oral) cause?

  • Nausea can sometimes occur when you first start taking Etoposide.
  • You may be given an anti-nausea medicine with your treatment.
  • Loss of appetite; changes in tatse
  • Mouth sores or ulcers
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Hair loss is common and may begin within a few days or weeks of treatment.
  • If hair loss occurs, use a gentle baby shampoo and a soft brush. Avoid hair spray, bleaches, dyes and perms.

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  • Fever of 38°C or higher
  • Chills and rigors
  • Sore throat, hoarseness
  • Pain or difficulty in urination
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes

Before taking Etoposide (Oral) , what precautions must I follow?

  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist regarding other medicines or supplements you are taking.
  • Use effective birth control during treatment. Inform your doctor if you plan to get or suspect that you are pregnant.

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Etoposide (Oral) ?

Avoid taking grapefruit and its juice while on Etoposide.

How should Etoposide (Oral) be used?

It is a capsule taken by mouth. It can be taken with food or on an empty stomach, with a glass of water or juice.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of Etoposide, take it as soon as you can if it is within 12 hours of the missed dose. If it is over 12 hours since your missed dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your usual dosing times.​

What should I do if I overdose?

If you overdose on this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.
