About the Event
Pathogen genomics has emerged as a critical tool for outbreak response and preparedness. However, in many low-resource countries, the potential to utilise genomic data for early disease detection and development of new diagnostic tools, therapeutics and vaccines is not fully realised. In Asia, the current capacity of pathogen genomics is limited and wider issues such as regulation continue to be a barrier.
Join Asst Prof Rukie de Alwis and Asst Prof Tan-Koi Wei Chuen from Duke-NUS Medical School as they discuss efforts and challenges in sustaining the use of pathogen genomics in current infectious disease surveillance systems and strengthening the vaccine regulatory systems for public health emergencies in Asia.
About the Speakers
Asst Prof Ruklanthi (Rukie) de Alwis is a Deputy Director of the Centre for Outbreak Preparedness (COP), Duke-NUS. She is a viral immunologist and vaccinologist with over a decade of experience working on infectious diseases, whose research interests include antibody responses, surveillance, diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines against viral pathogen. Asst Prof Rukie is currently leading and supporting several vaccine-related projects and genomics initiatives, including the Asia Pathogen
Genomics Initiative which partners with 14 Asian countries to improve access to pathogen genomic sequencing.
Asst Prof Tan-Koi Wei Chuen is an Assistant Professor & Lead of Regulatory System Strengthening in Centre of Regulatory Excellence (CoRE), Duke-NUS. She is the Co-Investigator for vaccine regulation project funded by the Asian Development Bank "Regional Support to Address the Outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 and Potential Outbreaks of Other Communicable Diseases". Her research focuses on regulatory systems strengthening, policy innovation and pharmacovigilance. Asst Prof Tan-Koi was previously a Regulatory Consultant leading the Regulatory Research and Risk Communication teams at Health Sciences Authority.
About the Facilitator
Dr Khoo Yoong Khean is a Scientific Officer at the Centre for Outbreak Preparedness (COP), Duke-NUS. He is a medical doctor by training with experience in primary healthcare, emergency and trauma medicine, nephrology, and cardiology and has volunteered as a medical humanitarian worker in disaster areas. Dr Khoo is currently focusing on health systems and policy research and regulatory systems strengthening through various regional projects, including Asia Pathogen Genomics Initiative, to support the policy development and capacity-building efforts.
